Bickmore, Albert Smith

Born: 1839, St George, Maine, U.S.A.

 

career:

Zoologist who travelled in the Dutch East Indies1 with the special object of collecting shells in the Moluccas, identical with those of Rumphius.2 In 1870 he was appointed Professor of Natural History at Madison University, Hamilton (New York); from 1869-1914 he was attached to the Amer. Mus. Nat. Hist., New York.

 

Collecting localities:

Departure from Batavia (June 7, 1865) via Semarang, Soerabaja, Makassar (SW. Celebes) (18-19), Timor (23); to the Moluccas: Ambon (June 29-beginning of Aug.), Nusa laut, Ceram, Banda (Sept. 8), Buru, Halmahe(i)ra (= Gilolo), Ternate, Tidore; Minahassa (N. Celebes): Kema (Dec. 13-19); trip by boat to P. Limbi (= Lembeh), but on account of the heavy seas hardly being able to go ashore; Kema (24-25); on horseback to Manado (26); trip to the highlands (Dec. 28-Jan. 9, 1866), e.g. visiting Linu Lake, Tompasso, Langowan, neighbouring mud-wells, Tondano Lake and Kakas, Rurukan; Kema (Jan. 9); Makassar (SW. Celebes) (Jan. 15); Java: Soerabaja, Semarang, Batavia (Febr.); to Sumatra: Padang (Febr. 21) and Tapanoeli (Manindjau Lake), Bataklands, Padang, Benkoelen (Apr. 18) and across S. Sumatra to Palembang (arrival May 9); Banka (May 13), Riouw, Singapore, Cochinchina and China.

It is not known to me whether any botanical collections were made by him; Warburg was not able to settle it either.
