Cleerens, Jo(h)annes Baptista

Born: 1785, Antwerp, Belgium. Died: Apr. 18, 1850, Ambon, Moluccas.

 

career:

Entered the military service in 1807 and went through some campaigns in Russia and Spain. He went to the D.E.I. as Asst Inspector of the Military Administration; in the course of time colonel; he returned to Europe and was given the honorary rank of Major-General in 1835. He subsequently returned to the D.E.I. in 1840, was appointed Resident of the Priangan Regencies, and in 1846 Governor of the Moluccas.

He sent Maba ebenus Spreng. and other plants from Ambon to Hort. Bog. in 1847.1 Other references2 give the name W. Cleerens, probably a mistake.
