Dennys, Dr Nicholas Belfield

Died: 1900, Hongkong.

 

career:

Entered the civil department of the Navy in 1855; appointed Student Interpreter at Peking in 1863; 1866-76 editor of the China Mail of Hongkong and Curator of the Museum there; in 1877 appointed Assistant Protector of the Chinese at Singapore and Librarian and Curator of the Museum; 1879-88 employed in Magistrate’s work at Singapore, and then at Gopeng. Invalided home in 1889; he resigned in 1890; in 1894 appointed Protector of the Chinese and Magistrate in Br. N. Borneo, where he became Editor of the Br. N. Borneo Herald; in 1899 Acting Judge and Member of Council.

 

collections:

Plants and seeds from the Mal. Penins. to Hort. Sing. (pres. 1881-82); he sent a number of specimens from Borneo to Singapore in 1897.
