career:

(Merrill informed C.A. Backer that W. was possibly murdered by natives of Balabac), ex-soldier. From 1911-17 he collected plants in the Philippines, for example in Mindanao (March-July 1911).

Several plants were named after him (cf. Backer, Verkl. Woordenb., 1936).
