Description
Mid-canopy tree up to 40 m tall and 100 cm dbh. Stem with copious white
latex. Stipules absent. Leaves in whorls, simple, penni-veined. Flowers ca. 10
mm in diameter, white, with corolla tube, placed in two-layered umbel. Fruits
ca. 250 mm long, brownish dehiscent follicles, placed in pairs, with many small
hairy, wind dispersed seeds.
Ecology
In undisturbed but usually in disturbed forests (logged) up to 800 m
altitude. In mixed dipterocarp forest on clayey and sandy soils. Also found in
swamps on hillsides and ridges.
Uses
The latex is used against shingles, boils, abcesses, and ring worm. Also
used as an ingredient for chewing gum.
Distribution
Thailand, Peninsular Malaysia, Sumatra, Java, Borneo (Sarawak, Brunei,
Sabah, West-, Central-, South- and East-Kalimantan), and the Philippines.
