During several years of ecological field work in the Sungai Wain area, I have collected a huge amount of tree specimens from this region. Since there are hardly any general tree guides available for Borneo, it occurred to me that it would be nice to put my checklist of tree species of Sungai Wain on the internet with brief descriptions and pictures of all species. I hope that this checklist will increase the interest of the general public for the spectacular trees of this region and thus contribute to the sustained protection of this unique forest reserve near the city of Balikpapan.

This website presents an illustrated checklist for the trees of the Sungai
Wain Protection forest in East Kalimantan, Indonesia. This checklist is based on
field surveys done during ecological field work and collections that are
present in the Nationaal Herbarium of the Netherlands in Leiden. When available
I have used recent monographs to exclude synonyms from the species list, however,
synonymy remains a problem in families and genera that have not been revised yet.
Also, most identifications of plant material from the field surveys were
based on sterile material and are thus not entirely reliable. However,
the checklist will be continually updated when identifications of the
voucher material change or when new data is available.
