career:

A well-known pteridologist who got his education at Stanford University and in Germany, taking his Ph.Dr’s degree at Halle in 1896; appointed in the Philippines late 1903; Professor and Dean, Los Baños, P.I., 1909-17; Professor University of California, 1928-32; Technical Adviser, Dept of Agriculture and Nat. Resources, Manila, and Director of the Nation. Economic Garden, Los Baños, 1932-35. Author of many papers on pteridophytes and useful plants, mainly in Philip. Journ. Sci. Bot. since 1907, besides in Elmer, Leafl. Philip. Botany; etc.

He wrote a ‘Fern Flora of the Philippines’ in 3 volumes (1958-60).

He is commemorated in Capparis copelandii Elmer, Cyrtandra copelandii Merr., and in several other plant species.

Negros and Panay (Jan.); Mindanao: Davao (March), Cotabato and Zamboanga, Mt Apo at Todaya (Apr. and Oct.). -19. . . Luzon: Lamao Forest Reserve; Mt Maquiling.-1909. Luzon: Mt Pulog (May 11-13).1-Probably in many other localities.-W. Java (May 1915):2 G. Gedeh-Pangrango etc.
