General information

Library collection: 
The rich historical collection of books, periodicals, plant illustrations and reprints are indispensable for research and teaching of systematic botany. The collection consists of about 45.000 books, 100.000 journal volumes, 100.000 reprints, 90 000 microfiches and plant illustrations (see below). At the moment the library holds more than 840 current journal subscriptions and exchanges. The library pursues an active exchange policy which is possible thanks to the many in-house publications of the institute, and which yields many rare acquisitions not commercially available.

The library serves a diverse clientele that includes, apart from our own staff and students, many colleagues from sister institutes and is also open as a reference botanical library to the public.

Pictorial collection  (Icones):
The pictorial collection of the Nationaal Herbarium Nederland includes about 40.000 pictures. The three main criteria on which the arrangement has been based are: 1) value, 2) size, and 3) taxonomy (alphabetical to families, genera, and species). The valuable and historical collection (about 3000 sheets) includes the watercolours, drawings and black-and-white prints before ca.1850, handcoloured prints, and colour prints. Many are either anonymous or copies; these are often filed under collectors names (Blume, D. van Royen, Seba  a.o.).
