BLUMEA[Top of this page] [Catalogue of publications] [NHN]
A climbing bamboo endemic to North Queensland in Australia, previously named Bambusa moreheadiana, represents a new monotypic endemic genus there, Mullerochloa. Its clambering-scrambling, generally non-twining habit, sympodial rhizomes, inflated proximal ends of culm internodes and culm sheaths with a wrinkled basal zone, are distinctive vegetative characters. Additional important characters of the reproductive system include the iterauctant flowering habit, producing clusters of pseudospikelets, each with 4–9 flowers and a terminal vestigial flower; paleas that conspicuously exceed the lemmas in length; consistently four anthers borne on a filament tube; and a glabrous ovary. A discussion of the circumscription of the Asiatic genus Bambusa, with which a number of other distinct genera, including Mullerochloa, have been confused, is provided.

Seed coat morphology was observed through SEM for 65 species and 10 sections of Impatiens. Several types of seed coat are recognized in this study. On the basis of comparison with other characters such as chromosome numbers, floral characters and seedling morphology, systematic problems concerning Impatiens are briefly discussed.

Two new species ofTachia (Gentianaceae: Helieae) are described from Brazil. They share the unusual characteristic of quadrangular, winged stems, formerly only known from Tachia longipes in Suriname. They differ from this species in their larger, winged, keeled, and long-acuminate calyx lobes. Tachia lancisepala, spec. nov., is only known from one collection from the State of Rondônia in Brazil, and has unusually large and broadly funnelshaped corollas and ovate leaves with winged petioles. Tachia siwertii, spec. nov., has been found in three separate areas in southern Amazonas and Pará (Brazil) and is characterized by more elliptic leaves, unwinged petioles, and a narrower corolla than T. lancisepala.

Vaccinium section Rigiolepis (Hook.f.) Sleumer is revised for the Flora
Malesiana region. In the introduction a short history of the genus (section) and
its defining characters are presented followed by comments about Sleumer’s
classification for this section. Numerical techniques using features suggested
by Sleumer on ‘indet’ specimens at Leiden counsel a more conservative approach
to species delimitation and the resultant revision for this section recognizes
thirteen species including three new taxa, viz., V. crinigrum, V.
suberosum, and V. linearifolium. Lectotypes for V. borneense
W.W. Sm. and
V. leptanthum Miq. are also proposed.

The genus Labisia (Myrsinaceae) is revised for the Flora Malesiana region. Seven species are recognised. Several earlier described species are synonymous to L. pumila and reduced to varieties of that species: var. alata, var. lanceolata, var. neriifolia and var. sessilifolia. A new record of L. longistyla is mentioned. Labisia malouiana and L. obtusifolia are excluded from the genus.
