A taxonomic revision of Hymenophyllaceae

Atsushi Ebihara, Jean-Yves Dubuisson, Kunio Iwatsuki, Sabine Hennequin & Motomi Ito

A new classification of Hymenophyllaceae, consisting of nine genera (Hymenophyllum, Didymoglossum, Crepidomanes, Polyphlebium, Vandenboschia, Abrodictyum, Trichomanes, Cephalomanes and Callistopteris) is proposed. Every genus, subgenus and section chiefly corresponds to the monophyletic group elucidated in molecular phylogenetic analyses based on chloroplast sequences. Brief descriptions and keys to the higher taxa are given, and their representative members are enumerated, including some new combinations.

Review of the genus Gymnopetalum (Cucurbitaceae)

W.J.J.O. de Wilde & B.E.E. Duyfjes

Gymnopetalum Arn. is distributed from India to the Moluccas. There are 4 species, including 1 new species, G. orientale W.J. de Wilde & Duyfjes, from E Malesia. In G. integrifolium (Roxb.) Kurtz 2 new varieties, besides the type-variety, are accepted: G. integrifolium var. penicaudii (Gagnep.) W.J. de Wilde & Duyfjes (in China) and G. integrifolium var. pectinatum W.J. de Wilde & Duyfjes (in E Java). A key to the species is presented. The Malesian taxa are fully described.

Scopellaria, a new genus name in Cucurbitaceae

W.J.J.O. de Wilde & B.E.E. Duyfjes

With the publication of the redefinition of the genus Zehneria and some resembling genera in SE Asia, it appeared that the name Scopella W.J. de Wilde & Duyfjes is a homonym of the older Scopella Mains (1939). Therefore, a new name for the genus Scopella and the necessary new combinations for its specific and intraspecific taxa are proposed. For a key to these and their descriptions see De Wilde & Duyfjes (2006).

New species of Lessingianthus (Asteraceae, Vernonieae) from central Brazil

Massimiliano Dematteis

Two additional species of Lessingianthus (Vernonieae, Asteraceae) from the Brazilian highlands are described and illustrated. One of the new species, Lessingianthus barrosoanus, is characterized by the presence of solitary heads disposed in relatively long, flexuous branches. It has certain resemblance to L. ligulifolius (Mart. ex DC.) H. Rob., which has short, commonly erect branches of the inflorescence, and capitula geminate or disposed in groups. Lessingianthus minimus is closely related to L. reitzianus (Cabrera) H. Rob., but differs in having acuminate phyllaries, glabrous corolla lobes and lanceolate leaves, cuneate at the base.

A new species and a new name for a subspecies of Clerodendrum (Lamiaceae) from Africa

Carel C.H. Jongkind

Clerodendrum atlanticum Jongkind and C. cephalanthum Oliv. subsp. occidentale Jongkind are described and illustrated.

Notes on Malesian Fabaceae (Leguminosae–Papilionoideae). 12. The genus Crotalaria

Frits Adema

Several species of Crotalaria are discussed. Two new species: C. aiantha Adema and C. luzoniensis Adema and one new variety: C. assamica Benth. var. philippinensis Adema are described. A key to the species in the Flora Malesiana area is presented. Notes on species not included in the Flora Malesiana treatment are given. Some aberrant specimens are discussed.

Revision of Millettia section Truncaticalyces (Leguminosae–Papilionoideae)

Neduvoto Mollel & Frits Adema

A revision of Millettia sect. Truncaticalyces is presented. Five species are recognized. A key to the species and an identification list are included.

A new name, and notes on extra-floral nectaries, in Lagunaria (Malvaceae, Malvoideae)

L.A. Craven, C. Miller & R.G. White

The Australian taxon Lagunaria patersonius subsp. bracteata is raised to specific rank as L. queenslandica, based upon morphological and ecological dissimilarities between it and the autonymic taxon, L. patersonius subsp. patersonius. The latter taxon occurs on the southwest Pacific Ocean islands, Lord Howe and Norfolk Islands. Extra-floral nectaries are reported in Lagunaria, apparently for the first time, and contrasted with those occurring in species of Hibiscus sections Bombicella and Furcaria.

Two new species of Coussarea and a new combination in Faramea (Rubiaceae, Coussareeae) from the Guianas

Piero G. Delprete

During the preparation of the treatment of the family Rubiaceae for the Flora of the Guianas, two new species of Coussarea were discovered. One species, Coussarea longilaciniata, was collected in Guyana and is characterized by its long-lanceolate calyx lobes; the other, C. spicata, is from French Guiana and is unique in the genus by its spicate inflorescences. In addition, Faramea sessiliflora var. pedunculata is here elevated to the species level, and a new description of F. sessiliflora is also provided in view of the re-delimitation of this species.

Mallotus kongkandae (Euphorbiaceae): new record for China

S.E.C. Sierra & P.C. van Welzen

Mallotus kongkandae Welzen & Phattar. was thought to be endemic to Thailand, but it also occurs in China, though known under other names. The new list of synonyms, a distribution map, notes on habitat and ecology, and collector details are included.

The distinction of five Mallotus species formerly in section Hancea (Euphorbiaceae)

P.C. van Welzen, S.E.C. Sierra, M.J.H. Gebraad & K.K.M. Kulju

Mallotus concinnus Airy Shaw, M. havilandii Airy Shaw, M. insularum (Airy Shaw) Slik, and M. miquelianus (Scheff.) Boerl. are very similar in appearance, with opposite leaves of which one large and elliptic, and the other reduced and more or less obcordate. However, a detailed look revealed enough differences to regard them as distinct species.

The Mallotus wrayi complex (Euphorbiaceae)

P.C. van Welzen & S.E.C. Sierra

The Mallotus wrayi King ex Hook.f. complex on the Sunda Shelf of the Malay Archipelago (Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, Java, Borneo) appeared to comprise four species instead of a single, very heterogeneous one. Two synonyms (M. caudatus Merr. and M. lancifolius Hook.f.) are resurrected and a new species, M. spinifructus, is described. Important characters can be found in the density of the hairs (glandular scale-like, simple or stellate), type of stellately bundled hairs, lengths of inflorescences, bracts, and bracts of the terminal bud, and in the stigma width and hairiness.

Endocarp morphology of African Celtis (Celtidaceae/Ulmaceae)

A. Sattarian & L.J.G. van der Maesen

Endocarp morphology of 14 species of mainly African Celtis was examined using light and scanning electron microscopy. Macro- and micro-morphological characters included endocarp shape, colour, size, surrounding rim and SEM examination of the outer layer of the endocarp. Different classes of shape and sculpture were recognised. A key for the identification of the investigated taxa based on endocarp characters is provided.
