This comprehensive world monograph of the Hypopterygiaceae gives the most thorough scientific treatment of this interesting family of beautiful forest mosses. It includes a critical taxonomic revision of the species. A series of phylogenetic analyses unravels the mutual relationships of the genera and species. The fine line drawings, detailed distribution maps, full descriptions, and useful general and regional keys provide excellent identification tools.

Hypopterygiaceae show their greatest diversity in Indo Malaysia and Australasia, but they are also well represented in tropical to warm-temperate South and East Asia and occur in Africa and the New World. The hitherto c. 160 validly published species and intraspecific taxa are reduced to 21 species arranged in 7 genera (Canalohypopterygium, Catharomnion, Cyathophorum, Dendrocyathophorum, Dendrohypopterygium, Hypopterygium, Lopidium). The well-known palaeotropical genus Cyathophorella is united with Cyathophorum. Dendrohypopterygium is a newly described Austral genus. The phylogenetic analyses – based on 57 morphological characters and, initially, 34 species, including the Hypopterygiaceae and representatives of possibly related families – support the monophyletic status of the family.

The information on phylogenetic relationships and the notes on geographical variation and ecology are indispensable to anyone interested in Asian, Australasian, and Austral bryophytes and/or pleurocarpous mosses.
