The Index of vernacular plant names of Suriname is a splendid tool to link local plant names, used by the people of Suriname, with names in scientific use. Local names are especially important for plants used in medicine, for wood, fish-poison, food or other commodities.
The background information for this comprehensive index was collected during almost 50 years of fieldwork and herbaria research, notably by Dr. J.C. Lindeman from the Utrecht branch of the Nationaal Herbarium Nederland.
Introductory notes are given on the history of Suriname, its diverse population groups and the diversity of languages spoken, including remarks on spelling. The history of botany and nature conservation in Suriname are also addressed.
The user-friendly indices to both scientific and vernacular names also contain references to herbarium specimens that serve as vouchers for these names.
The following format is adopted for the scientific index (between brackets the abbreviation of the language, followed by the botanical collection):
AMARANTHACEAE
Alternanthera philoxeroides (Mart.) Griseb.
watrakrarun (Sr) Li 5120
Amaranthus australis (A. Gray) J. D. Sauer
busiklarun (Sr) Jo 53
For the vernacular index:
| Vernacular name (language) | Scientific name | Family |
|---|---|---|
| abadya (Sr) abenbčlč (Sa) abenbčlč (Sa) abčnbčlč, witi (Sa) abentini (Au) |
Duroia eriopila Pouteria guianensis Pouteria trigonosperma Pouteria cuspidata subsp. dura Iryanthera sagotiana |
Rubiaceae Sapotaceae Sapotaceae Sapotaceae Myristicaceae |
This Index will be indispensable for many different user groups such as botanists, ethnobotanists, linguists, anthropologists, custom officers, and all those interested in the plants and people of Suriname.
