The Checklist of the Zingiberaceae of Malesia is a major step towards a revision of the Zingiberaceae for Flora Malesiana. The last monograph of the family was written a hundred years ago by Schumann (1904). Since then, revisions of the family have been published for smaller areas within Malesia, e.g. for Peninsular Malaysia by Holttum and for Borneo by Smith, but for the rest of the area taxonomic publications are scattered and outdated.
The list is a compilation of current knowledge which will be fundamental to future work. It comprises 1661 names derived from the International Plant Names Index and other publications on Zingiberaceae. For each name found, the authors and place of publication are cited in standard formats, along with an indication of the status of the name. Type specimens are cited from herbaria and from literature and, when lectotypes have been chosen, the place of lectotypification is given.
