Blumea and Persoonia go online

We are pleased to announce that the management of the National Herbarium of the Netherlands signed an agreement with IngentaConnect to publish its journals online.

Starting with the first issue of this year (52/1, July 2007) the NHN-journals will have their own website among about 4500 journals in the Ingenta environment. IngentaConnect not only offers online access to issues, soon including 6 years of back issues, but also search options (titles, authors, key words) and acquisition (‘add to your cart’).

Until 1 September 2007 all content will be freely available for all users of IngentaConnect. From 1 September 2007 onwards subscribers can still acquire papers online for free until the end of the year, while all other visitors of IngentaConnect will have to pay a rate, set by IngentaConnect, for acquiring papers.

From 1 January 2008 onwards we will offer subscription in three formats: Hard copy only; Electronic version only; and Hard copy + electronic version. Subscription rates will be announced later this year.

We hope that the electronic versions will contribute to the fame of our journals.

During this study field data were collected on tall trees, tree regeneration, lianas, several smaller growth forms and specific environmental parameters such as topography and canopy gaps. The field survey was executed in 240 subplots randomly located in study sites of 18 and 450 ha and includes 40,000 plant records. In addition, 120 soil samples were analysed as to their content of germinating seeds.

Flora Malesiana

Editorial Committee

Flora Malesiana is a systematic account of the flora of Malesia, the plant-geographical unit spanning six countries in Southeast Asia: Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei Darussalam, the Philippines, and Papua New Guinea.

The family treatments are not published in a systematic order but as they come available by the scientific efforts of some 100 collaborators all over the world.
Each family treatment contains keys for identification, descriptions of the recognized taxa from family to variety, and a large amount of information (with literature references) on, e.g., taxonomy, variability, synonymy, typification, distribution, habitats and ecology, morphology and anatomy, phytochemistry, and uses.

Attention is given in the first place to the indigenous species but non-native, cultivated or escaped species are also treated (described and keyed out) or at least mentioned. Drawings and photographs illustrate the treatments, and as a general rule at least one species of each native genus has a full-page drawing.

There are two series: I, Spermatophyta (Seed Plants), and II, Pteridophyta (Ferns and Fern allies). From 1991 onward the Flora is published for the Foundation Flora Malesiana by the National Herbarium - Leiden. Back issues published earlier by Wolters/Noordhoff and Kluwer Publishers are now also exclusively available from the National Herbarium.

Flora Malesiana Bulletin

Established in 1947 by C.G.G.J. van Steenis

ISSN 0071-5778

Editor

e-mail:

veldkamp@nhn.leidenuniv.nl

Flora Malesiana Bulletin (established in 1947) is an annual newsletter that provides information for and contact between institutes and individual botanists with an interest in the mainly taxonomic botany of the Malesian region in the wide sense.

Each issue contains information on progress in Malesian botany, expeditions, fieldwork, herbaria/gardens, organizations, personal news, and papers on various subjects, a chapter with reviews of new publications, and is especially important for the extensive Bibliography on Bryophytes, Pteridophytes, Spermatophytes, and General Subjects.

Every four years indices to scientific plant names and personal (author) names are provided upon completion of a volume. These indices provide a fast survey of work done during the past 54 years and are of great importance to students of plants and people of the Malesian area.

Subscription is free for those botanists and institutes working on and in the Malesian region. For others the price is EUR 18.00 per copy (wxcl. postage and handling).

Contents of issues and Bibliography of Flora Malesiana Bulletin are available on-line from 1995 onwards.

Blumea is an externally refereed international journal containing papers on descriptive botany (taxonomy, plant-geography, morphology, anatomy) of Phanerogams as well as Cryptogams (excluding Fungi). Geographical coverage parallels the focusses of the three branches of the Nationaal Herbarium Nederland: Africa, south of the Sahara; Malesia; South America, especially the Guianas.

As a rule three parts are issued per year, and the total annual page number will be approximately 600. Annual subscription please inquire at the Publications office.

Malesian Seed Plants

By M.M. J. van Balgooy

The recognition to which family a plant belongs, is the first, and often most important step to species identification, and consequently to all scientific and practical information on an unknown plant. Identification keys to the whole Malesian flora are not available. Regional work like the "Tree Flora of Malaya"and the "Flora of Java" fill important gaps in this respect, but there is a widely felt need for user-friendly indentification means for the whole of Malesia. The series "Malesian Seed Plants" for the first time offers such a tool.

Volume 1 contains lists of spot-characters most of which, with some training, can be easily observed in herbarium material. These characters have been arranged in a more or less logical way, e.g., characters of stem, the leaves, the flowers, the fruits etc.

Volume 2 presents 111 families of Malesian seed plants that at least have one tree species with a diameter at breast height of over 10 cm or a height of more than 10 cm.

Volume 1 - Spot characters. An aid for identification of families and genera.

Leiden, 1997. 154 pp., illustrated, paperbound. ISBN 90-71236-31-5. EUR 22.50

Volume 2 - Portraits of tree families.

Leiden, 1998. 308 pp., illustrated, paperbound. ISBN 90-71236-36-6. EUR 45.00

Volume 3 - Portraits of non-tree families.

Flora of the Guianas

The Flora of the Guianas is a critical and illustrated Flora of Guyana, Suriname, and French Guiana designed to treat Phanerogams as well as Cryptogams of the area.

Publication takes place in fascicles, each treating a single family, or a group of related families, in the following series:

A: Phanerogams
B: Ferns and Fern allies
C: Bryophytes
D: Algae
E: Fungi and Lichens

A list of numbered families in taxonomic order has been established for the Phanerogams. Publication of fascicles will take place when available. In the Supplementary series an index of plant collectors in the Guianas appears. One illustrated volume per country is prepared. Entries are in alphabetic order, consisting of a short biography, data on expeditions, plant collections, location of field noted and manuscripts, and a list of publications. All manuscripts are externally reviewed.

The flora will provide fundamental and applied information; it will cover, when possible, wood anatomy, chemical analysis, economic uses, vernacular names, and data on endangered species.

Fascicles are all with folding map.
