Latin for 'from Java'.
Note
Two subspecies are described for this species, one in Java (subsp.
javanica) and one in Borneo (subsp. scaphifolia). The type of
the Bornean subspecies was collected in Sungai Wain.
Description
Upper canopy tree up to 46 m tall and 99 cm dbh. Stem with resin. Stipules
dropped early. Leaves alternate, simple, penni-veined, petiole and lower surface
covered with scales, feeling like sand paper. Flower ca. 15 mm diameter, white,
placed in panicles. Fruits ca. 5 mm long, yellow-brown, with two ca. 60 mm long
wings, wind dispersed.
Ecology
In undisturbed mixed dipterocarp forests up to 100 m altitude. Mostly on
hillsides and ridges with sandy soils. In secondary forests usually present as a
pre-disturbance remnant tree.
Uses
The timber is used.
Distribution
Java, Borneo (East-Kalimantan where it is mostly collected in the Sungai
Wain area).
