Description
Sub-canopy tree up to 22 m tall and 39 cm dbh. Stipules absent. Leaves
alternate, compound, leaflets opposite, rather variable in size, penni-veined,
glabrous. Flowers ca. 4 mm diameter, white-yellowish, protruding stamens,
flowers placed in branched inflorescences. Fruits ca. 39 mm diameter,
orange-red, curled, dehiscent pods. Seeds black, remaining attached to opened
pods.
Ecology
In disturbed to undisturbed mixed dipterocarp forests up to 500 m altitude.
Common on hillsides and ridges, but also along rivers and streams. On sandy to
clay soils.
Uses
Wood locally used for building purposes. Roots and shoots are used against
itch. The leaves (pounded) are used for rubbing the skin in patients suffering
from smallpox. The fruits are used for seasoning of food.
Distribution
Peninsular Malaysia, Sumatra, Borneo (Sabah, Sarawak, South- and
East-Kalimantan).
