Latin for the local name of this species.

Description
Shrub up to 5 m tall and 8 cm dbh. Stem thorny. Stipules absent. Leaves opposite, simple, tripli-veined, hairy (sandpaper-like), margin toothed. Flowers ca. 5 mm diameter, yellow-orange-red-pink, with corolla tube, placed in flower heads. Fruits ca. 5 mm diameter, blue-purple, drupes.

Ecology
In secondary regrowth, usually near the coast, but also in kerangas up to 500 m altitude. Usually on sandy soils.

Uses
Ornamental.

Distribution
Pan-tropical, but originally from tropical America. In Borneo collected throughout the island.
