Tourist information

Leiden is a historical city with a pituresque old centre, 35 almshouses and many other buildings from the 15th to the 18th century. The Botanical Garden (Hortus Botanicus) founded in 1590 is one of the oldest in Europe. Between Amsterdam and The Hague, Leiden borders to the East and South on a traditional dairy farming area with meadow country dotted with windmills and traversed by numerous canals and ditches, and to the North on the extensive bulb growing area. Thanks to its geographical position and excellent rail and road connections Leiden is an ideal centre for excursions to other parts of the Netherlands.
