Rhodophyta research projects

Bangiophycidae (systematics and biogeography)

Giuseppe C. Zuccarello - NHN Leiden

This project concentrates on the ordinal and generic relationships within this ancestral red algal group. We incorporate molecular data to determine the monophyly of both orders and genera, to produce a more natural taxonomy. We would like to understand the relationships of the genera in the orders Erythropeltidales (Erythrotrichia, Erythrocladia, Sahlingia) to determine if they are monophyletic. We also concentrate on the order Stylonematales.

Sequencing multiple samples from a wide geographic range will give us insights into the history of monophyletic lineages ('species', many of these lineages are worldwide) and may address factor that produce the present-day patterns.

Eucheuma & Kappaphycus

Giuseppe C. Zuccarello - NHN Leiden

The two algal genera Eucheuma and Kappaphycus are commercially grown for their carrageenan content and have been transported around the world for aquaculture purposes. The taxonomy of the two genera is difficult due to their phenotypic plasticity and that commercial growers give names based on their gross morphology. We are interested in the taxonomy of these genera and the genetic consequences of aquaculture techniques on diversity (often only a few kg. of tissue are transported to start new farm in new countries).
