Flowers actinomorphic, usually pedicelled, sepals imbricate, petals and disc sometimes rudimentary, usually absent. Staminate inflorescences not to distinctly branched, usually 3 flowers per bract. Staminate flowers: sepals (3)4 or 5(-8), ± free; stamens 3-10, free, shorter than sepals; staminodes (or disc glands) sometimes 3-8; pistillode usually present. Pistillate inflorescences not branched; bracts inserted on rachis to usually along pedicel, 1 or 3 per flower. Pistillate flowers: sepals 4-6; ovary 2-4-locular, ovules 2 per locule; stigmas complete to divided into 2 lobes. Fruits berries to late dehiscing fleshy capsules. Seeds ± ellipsoid, usually laterally flattened, enclosed by fleshy and usually edible arillode.
