Notes: Dodonaeus wrote that also other species of Clematis were identified as this one: 'Noch vindt men een ander gheslacht van Winde / dat oock van sommighen voor een Clematis altera ghehouden wordt / .. Die bloemen sijn groot / in vieren ghesneden / van verwe blauw /..' (there is also another genus that climbs / that some people also call C. altera / the flowers are big / divided in 4/ and with a bleu color). This description can apply to a blue form of C. viticella L. or C. alpina (L.) Mill. C. montana Buch.-Ham. ex DC originates from East Asia and arrived much later in Europe.
