Allen, Betty Eleanor Gosset Molesworth

Born: 1913, Opotiki, New Zealand.

 

career:

was trained in botany at Auckland Univ. College in New Zealand, and later worked at the Auckland War Memorial Museum. She came to Malaya after World War II planning some months vacation, but married Mr F.H.G. Allen, local manager of Henry Waugh & Cn Ltd, and remained there.

She is a keen collector, especially of ferns.

Author of papers on ferns, a regular contributor to the Malayan Naturalist Journal, and author of a book on Malayan Fruits (1967).

She left Malaya on retirement in June 1963.

 

Collecting localities:

From 1948 onwards. All over Malaya (excluding Kelantan and Trengganu).-1951. N. Borneo, Sarawak: on limestone. Br. N. Borneo (fragm. toll.).-1953. Small collection in Sumatra.-From Aug. 1956-Jan. 1957 in Sarawak: Mt Matang, Mt Santubong, and lowlands.-1957. Br. N. Borneo: Mt Kinabalu (Feb.).- 1959. Malaya: Ipoh Distr., Perak (with Kadim): G. Bujong Malacca (Aug. 10), Bt Batu Suloh via Kinta Forest (12), G. Tempurong (13), Oversea Kubor Chinese Tin Area (15).

Besides in Malaysia she collected in Europe, Australia, and New Zealand, but mostly cryptogams.

From the Malaysian region and N. Siam up to 1957 about 3300 ferns, 1600 bryophytes and lichens; only few phanerogams. Herb. Sing. [SING]: Malayan and Siamese ferns; comprehensive toll. of ferns in Herb. Stat. Mus. Stockholm [S] and in U.S. Nat. Herb. [US]; new records and interesting finds in Herb. Kew [K] and Brit. Mus.[BM]; also Malayan ferns in Herb. Auckl. Mus. [AK]; small set of ferns in Herb. Kepong [KEP]. She has a private working set of Malaysian pteridophytes and mosses.
