Deschamps, Emile

(Source: Flora Malesiana ser. 1, 1: Cyclopaedia of collectors)

career:

French traveller who in 1898 planned to make for sale botanical collections in Travancore, Cochin-China, Ceylon, Java, Sumatra, the Pacific Islands, Japan, Australia and the coast of China. Before Sept. 1900 plants were collected at Colombo, Pondicherry, Madras and Mahé de Malabar.1 Subsequently he went to Singapore.

In May 1901 he was at Shanghai.

Collecting localities:

In easily accessible places as far as Batu Gajah (Perak State) in the Malay Peninsula and in Penang (Sept. 1900-March 1901).2

collections:

Herb. Calcutta [CAL]: 662 nos (pres. 1901); Herb. Leiden [L]: set from India. From the correspondence1 it is evident that the collection consisted of common plants, and that the material was badly prepared and scrappy. As no data are known of later collections, it may be assumed that his collecting business was not much of a success.

literature:

(2) of Burkill in Gard. Bull. Str. Settlem. 4, 1927, nos 4-5. According to Burkill collecting started in Dec. 1900, but from above-mentioned letters it is evident that Deschamps was in Singapore at least as early as Sept. 25 of that year.
