career:

Military dispenser; Pbytochemist of the Botanic Gardens at Buitenzorg, 1888-92 (1891-92 chief of the Pharmacological Laboratory); father of systematic scientific investigations on the chemical properties of Indonesian plants. In 1895 he was appointed Assistant at the Colonial Museum at Haarlem, of which institution he was director from 1901.

Author of many papers on the use and history of economic plants, fish-poisons, etc.¹

Canarium greshoffi Koord. was named after him.

He made a collection of native medicines and medicinal plants and an additional herbarium of medicinal and poisonous plants.

He is cited by Uittien² as the collector of Thoracostachyum heyneanum (Back.) Uitt. in Palembang Res., S. Sumatra; the name was misread and rightly should be Grashoff (see there)
