Born: 1889, Balling ved Skive, Jutland, Denmark. Died: 1961, Copenhagen, Denmark.

 

career:

Botanist, in 1911 a student, M. Sc. in 1923, took his Drís degree in 1930; of the botanical division of the Pharmacological Institute at Copenhagen, 1929-35; from 1935 onwards Keeper of the Botanical Museum. Besides to Sumatra (see below), he travelled to the Far Oer (1922-23), Greenland (1924-25) and Africa (1927-28). During his stay in Sumatra, he was a guest of his brother. He retired in 1959.

Author of several publications on plant morphology, polyploidy, etc.

Liparis hagerupii J.J.Sm. and Polypodium hagerupii C.Chr. were named after him.

 

Collecting localities:

1916-17. Left Copenhagen June 23, 1916; travelling in Sumatra East and West Coast, visiting Toba Lake (Sept. 1916, also in 1917), Prapat Toba (Nov. 25, 1916), P. Nias (Jan. 1917), Lake of Manindjau and P. Pagai (Febr. 1917), both situated west of Sumatra; Padang Sidempoan (Feb. 1917), etc.; Mentawei Islands; Nias; Pagai; Sumatra West Coast: Padang Highlands. Back in Copenhagen Oct. 22, 1917.

 

collections:

In Herb. Copenhagen [C]: 525 nos + 200 preparations in alcohol, from Sumatra and neighbouring islands. J.J. Smith refers to some numbers of his.1 As during World War I the material was held up at Singapore, much of it mouldered and had to be thrown away after the Schweinfurth boxes were opened (oral inf.).
