Born: 1868, Toledo, Ohio, U.S.A. Died: 1962, Santa Cruz, Cal., U.S.A.

 

career:

Zoologist, educated at Stanford University, taking his Dr’s degree in 1909. For 30 years in different positions in the U.S.A.; Chief of the Division of fishes of the Bureau of Science, Manila, P.I., 1920-28; Acting Director Bureau of Science, Manila, July-Oct. 1923; since 1928 Curator Museum Zoology, Stanford. Member of the CRANE Expedition, 1928-29, sponsored by the Field Museum Nat. Hist. Chicago (see below), of a Philippine expedition (1931), and some other expeditions which explored in the Malaysian region too (1933-34, 1936-37). In 1940-41 he went to Asia once more, visiting the Philippines and Malaya.

As far as botany goes, his special interest is lichens; flowering plants were collected incidentally.

Crane Expedition, 1929. New Hebrides (March-Apr. 5); Solomon Islands (Apt. 10-23); Bismarck Archipelago: New Britain (April 28-29); NE. New Guinea: Huon Gulf (May 4); Sepik River (May 10-28); W. New Guinea, Vogelkop: Manokwari (31); Waigeo(u) (June 7); NE. Celebes: Lembeh Strait (20). Philippines: Culion (Apr. 22-27, 1931) (material of Cycas) and Busuanga.

The numbering of the ‘Crane Exp.’ collection runs as follows: nos 1-105 New Hebrides, 106-176 Solomon Isls, 177-208 New Britain, 209-376 mainland of New Guinea, 377-383 Waigeo(u), 384-402 Celebes. Cycas wadei Merr. collected by him in Culion in 1931, is no 1061.
