Hochstetter, Ferdinand von

Born: 1829, Esslingen, Austria. Died: 1884, Oberdöbling near Vienna, Austria.

 

career:

Studied theology and natural sciences; in 1856 appointed University Lecturer in the University of Vienna. He undertook the geology department of the ‘Novara’ expedition (see below). From 1860-81 Professor of Mineralogy and Geology at the Polytechnical Institute, Vienna.

 

Collecting localities:

Voyage in the ‘Novara’, 1857-59;1 cf. sub Jelinek (detailed itiner. etc.). Hochstetter and von Scherzer made some trips in Priangan Res., W. Java, visiting: G. Tangkoeban Prahoe (May 18, 1858, from Lembang) and exploring the vicinity of the Tjitaroem. From Luzon (P.I.) he mentions to have visited Jalajala and Binangonan, returning June 22, 1858, at Manila. In Dec. 1858 Hochstetter stayed behind in New Zealand,2 returning at the end of next year to Austria (Jan. 9, 1860 at Trieste).
