Came to the United States (Iowa) as a boy of thirteen; later he moved to the West. For several years he was connected with the U.S. Dept of Agriculture, spending a year (1904) in the Philippine Islands in the employ of the Bureau of Forestry. He is commemorated in Habenaria leibergii Ames.

Herb. Manila [PNH]: 160 nos from the Lamao Forest Reserve, collected on behalf of the Forestry Bureau. In literature we met with plants of his numbered above 6000, possibly in the For. Bur. series (see there). Evidently he collected mosses too.2

In Herb. Kew [K]: 39 mosses collected by John B. Leiburg in N. America (pres. 1890); the collector’s name was probably misspelled.

His collection of flowering plants was presented to the Univ. of Oregon [ORE], his other collections went to the U.S. Nat. Herb. Washington [US].
