career:

Since 1800 in the service of the East India Company in Penang, after 1805 acting Governor, and in 1820 finally appointed Governor until his departure in 1824 (according to Burkill,1 Governor from 1819-26!). In 1823 he founded Ayer Hitam Garden, Penang.

 

collections:

He gave his plants to Wallich (distribution see there) and it is said later to Kew [K]. In 1824 he presented a collection to the Horticultural Society in London, which was passed on to Kew [K]. At the sale of the Herbarium of the latter Society2 plants of his from Prince of Wales’ Isl. (= Penang) were sold to Planchon.
