Praetorius, Christiaan Frederik Eduard

Born: 1799, Brunswick, Germany. Died: 1846, Soerabaja, Java.

 

career:

Since 1821 in Government employ in the D.E.I., appointed warehouse foreman at Tjikao (Krawang, W. Java); from 1828 in the Civil Service, viz 1829-34 Resident of Palembang (Sumatra),1 1834-37 Resident of Pekalongan (Java) and from 1837-39 Resident of (D)Japara (Java); subsequently Director of Agriculture till 1844 (the years 1842-43 spent in Holland); since the end of 1844 owner of a sugar factory.

Hoya praetorii Miq. was named after him.

 

Collecting localities:

1830-32. S. Sumatra: Palembang Residency.

 

collections:

Herb. Leiden [L]; many of his plants described by Blume in ‘Rumphia’ and ‘Museum Botanicum’.2 According to Backer (l.c. sub Biogr. data) he collected in Java too.

(1) He is the author of ‘Alphabetische opgave van de voornaamste houtsoorten in de residentie Palembang’ (De Indische Bij 1, 1843; p. 449-479).
