Born: 1875, Batavia, Java. Died: May 18, 1942, Buitenzorg, Java.

 

career:

Botanist who got his education in Holland, taking his Ph.Dr’s degree at Amsterdam in 1906; he came back to Java in 1907 to be appointed Phytopathologist in the employ of the Government Cinchona plantation at Tjinjiroean; since 1918 teacher at the School of Agriculture at Buitenzorg and since 1921 at the N.I.A.S. (Medical College) at Soerabaja. When pensioned off in 1933, he settled at Buitenzorg and was for several years a guest in the Foreigners’ Laboratory.1

Author of some papers on the flora of Java,2 etc.

J.J. Smith named some orchids after him.

Tengger and Tosari (Apr. 1927); G. Idjen (June 1927); G. Diëng (June 27, 1928) and Magelang; W. Java: Lembang (Nov. 12-14, 1928); G. Tangkoeban Prahoe (Nov. 16, 1928); E. Java: G. Wilis (Jan. 1929).-1st Trip to the Moluccas, 1929.3-4 SW. Celebes: Makassar and Bantimoeroeng (May 20); Ambon (May 24-June 4), collecting at Batoe Merah, Klein Hative, Fort Victoria, Batoe Gadjah, etc.; Seran (= Ceram) (June 6-8), at Piroe and Loki and environs; Ambon (June 9-30), at Hitoe, Roemah Tiga, Karang Pandjang, etc.; SW. Celebes: Bantimoeroeng (July 5).-Madoera with Coert (Sept. 1929); W. Java: Pengalengan (Kartamah) (Nov.) and at Tjiboerial near Buitenzorg (Nov.); E. Java: Soetji near Grissee (Apr. 18, 1930).-2nd Trip to the Moluccas, 1931.4 SW. Celebes: Malino (Oct. 18-19); Boeroe: Leksoela (Oct. 22); Ambon (arriving Oct. 23), visiting Benteng, Klein Hative, Karangpandjang, Waai, G. Salahoetoe (Nov. 2-4), G. Nona (7), G. Malintang (8), Galala, Hitoe Mesing, Soja di Atas (17), Paso (18); SW. Celebes: Bantimoeroeng Fall (Nov. 27).-E. Java: Bromo, G. Tengger (May 20, 1932); Glenmore in Besoeki (June 14 and 22, 1932); Banjoewangi (Watoe Dodol) (June 20); Radjegwesi Bay (S. coast) (probably in the same month as foregoing localities); Glenmore (May-June 1933); W. Herb. Bog. [BO], partly acquired by sale; dupl. in Herb. Leiden [L], some at Utrecht [U]. Lists of part of his collections are in the Herbarium at Buitenzorg.

In Ambon he collected the nos 54-154, 198-402 (May and June 1929) and nos 514-886 (Oct.-Nov. 1931); in Ceram the nos 155-197.5

He was assisted by the Indonesian collector Kartamah. He presented several living plants to Hort. Bog.
