Schomburgk, Sir Robert Hermann

Born: 1804, Freiburg, Silesia, Germany. Died: 1865, Schöneberg near Berlin, Germany.

 

career:

Naturalist and explorer who settled in North America about 1828; he set out to the West Indies in 1829, exploring British Guiana and the lower course of the Orinoco from 1835-39;1 from 1840-44 a member of the Committee for border-delimitation between Venezuela and Guiana; knighted in 1844; from 1848-57 British Consul in San Domingo, and from 1857-64 ditto at Bangkok, Siam; subsequently returned to Europe.

He is commemorated in the genus Schomburgkia Lindl. and in many plant species.

1857. Early in the year, on the way to Bangkok, collecting in Penang and Singapore.
