Born: 1899, Antwerp, Belgium. Died: 1964.

 

career:

Took his Dr’s degree in 1915 at Brussels; Professor of Paleontology and Geology in the University of Ghent and Director of the Royal Museum of Natural History of Belgium.

He accompanied the then crownprince Leopold of Belgium and his wife Astrid on their voyage to the Dutch East Indies in 1928-29. He is the editor of the results of that voyage.1

In 1932 he accompanied King Albert to the Belgian Congo, where he made exploration tours in 1938-39 and in 1946-47.

From Dec. 1928-May 1929 in the Dutch East Indies, visiting Java: Tandjong Priok, Buitenzorg, Wijnkoops Bay, Tjibodas (Tjibeureum), Lake Pendjaloe, environs of Cheribon and Semarang, Wonosobo, S of Djokja, Solo, Malang, Besoeki; Lesser Sunda Islands: Bali (Boeleleng Tamblingan Lake, dipterocarp forest at Sangeh, Den Passar, Kloengkoeng, etc.), Lombok (Ampenan, Mataram, Laboehanhadji), Soembawa (the river Brang Re); E. Borneo: Samarinda, mouth of the Mahakam, Balikpapan; SE. & Centr. Borneo: Bandjermasin, Barito River, Makandjang (on the Upper Barito), the Upper Maroewai, bivouac N of Poeroektjaoe; SW. Celebes: Makassar, Maros, Bantimoeroeng, Peak of Bonthain; Centr. Celebes: Donggala, Paloe Bay, Lemo; N. Celebes, Minahassa: Tondano, Kema and Manado; Moluccas: Ternate, Halmaheira (isthmus near Dodinga, and Passir Poeti on the E. coast), Ambon, Banda group (Bandaneira and G. Api summit); Papua Islands: Misoöl (S. coast, Lilinta) and P. We(e)im; Dutch West New Guinea: Manokwari, Moemi, Waïdera River, Moemi River, Arfak Mts, Anggi Lakes (Anggi Gita); P. Japen; Sorong (P. Doom); Pisang Islands: P. Saboeda; SW. New Guinea. Triton Bay, mouth of the Tombone River, and Lake Kamakawallar; Aroe Islands (P. Enoe, P. Kobroör, P. Wokam); S. Sumatra: Palembang, Sg. Sekana, direction G. Serillo; W. Sumatra: Padang Highlands (Apenberg, Solok, Pajacombo), Tapanoeli (Toba Lake, Sibolga, Taroetoeng, Padang Sidempoeang); E. Sumatra: Medan, Kuala Krapau; N. In Herb. Brussels [BR]: Algae,2 lichens (numerous), and mosses.3 The collection is not numbered.

The large zoological collections were elaborated in several volumes of the ‘Resultats scientifiques etc.’
