Born: 1885, Oyghem, Belgium.

 

career:

Missionary, educated at Scheut (Brussels), ordained priest in 1909 and subsequently leaving for the Philippines in September; from 1909-11 stationed at Bauco and Pugo (Luzon), from 1911-15 at Tubao and Bauco, from 1916-21 at Bangan, from 1921-24 at Tagudin; founded Kabugao Station in 1925; in 1932 at Tagudin; 1933 to Belgium; 1934 back in Luzon, stationed at Apayao, and since 1936 at Sabangan; in 1945 secretary of the bishop, in 1946 replaced at Bauco, Mt.Prov., Luzon.

In 1924 he made an expedition to the Negritos, and visited the U.S.A.

The genus Vanoverberghia Merr. and several plant species were named in his honour.

 

Collecting localities:

Philippines. Luzon: Bontoc Subprov., Bauco and vicinity (Jan. 1910-Aug. 1911). In 1912 and following years he continued his explorations in Mountain Prov., at Apayao, etc.
