Born: 1787, Zutfen, Gld, Holland. Died: 1860, Arnhem, Gld, Holland.

 

career:

Entered the Dutch Navy at the age of fifteen, and was pensioned off in the rank of rear-admiral in 1850. He made natural history collections in the Malay Archipelago (1815-19), and was a skilful draughtsman. He was the illustrator of Miquel’s ‘Flora van Ned. Indië’, of the report of Reinwardt’s voyage to the eastern part of the Malay Archipelago (edited by W.H. de Vriese), and of numerous other works.

He is the author of reminiscences of his voyage to the Dutch East Indies;1 he visited Banda in 1817.2

He was commemorated in Verhuellia Miq. and in Symplocos verhuellli Jungh. & de Vriese.

 

collections:

In the preface of his book he mentions the loss of his collections due to the wreck of H.M.S. ‘Adm. Evertzen’. When leaving the ship he could rescue only his sketch-book.

Numerous unpublished pencil drawings in Herb. Leiden [L].

His entomological collection was bequeathed to the Leiden Nat. Hist. Museum [now Naturalis].
