Born: 1906, Amsterdam, Holland.

 

career:

Bryologist, educated and graduated (Ph.Dr 1934) at Utrecht University. In 1930 he made a collecting tour in the Dutch East Indies; in 1940 he migrated to the U.S.A., and settled at Waltham, Mass.; in 1941 appointed Honorary Research Associate Farlow Herbarium, Harvard University; since 1942 bibliographer of the Arnold Arboretum (Harvard), preparing a biographical dictionary of botanists.

Founder and owner of the Chronica Botanica Co., besides, editor of the Annales Bryologici, a series of Plant Science books, etc. In recognition of his editorial and international relation work he was awarded the first Mary Soper Pope Medal of the Cranbrook Inst. of Science, Michigan, in 1946.

 

Collecting localities:

1930. Malay Peninsula: Mt Ophir (at Easter with Holltum); Java and Sumatra (Apr.-Sept.), in W. Java collecting at: Tjigombong, G. Gede-Pangrango, Tjibodas; in Centr. Java: G. Slamat; in E. Java: G. Kawi, G. Tengger.

Principally bryophytes;1 Selaginellaceae too. Owner of a private Herbarium, now in Farlow Herb., Cambr. (Mass.) [GH]; editor of exsiccatae. Dupl. in Herb. Bog. [BO], Sing. [SING]. His Musci in Herb. Brit. Mus. [BM], the ferns (few) in Gray Herb. [GH], the Hepaticae in Farlow [GH].
