Waitz, Friedrich August Carl

Born: 1798, Bückeburg, Schaumburg-Lippe, Germany. Died: 1882, Batavia, Java.

 

career:

Was sent to Java in the employ of the Civil Health Department in 1823, and was stationed at Semarang ; in 1828 and from 1836-44 on European leave. In 1849 he was pensioned off; from 1850-53 in Holland; in 1854 he was allowed to set up as a medical practitioner at Batavia, in 1855 he returned to Europe, and finally settled at Batavia in 1873. His interest mainly centred in native drugs;1 as a token of appreciation of his work King Willem I presented him with a copy of Blume’s Flora Javae.

He is commemorated in several plant names.

 

Collecting localities:

Between 1823-55. In W Java: Mandalawangi and G. Pangrango; Centr. Java: G. Ungarang, northern slope near Medini; G. Merapi and Merbaboe; Tegal and G. Slamat; Grobogan (Rembang) (Oct. 1842); coastal forest S of Djokja; beach and environs of Semarang; G. Muriah (= Moerjo);2 E. Java: Djati Kalangan, G. Wilis, G. Kawi, G. Ardjoeno, G. Tengger.

In literature he is cited as the collector of plants in Sumatra (Indrapoera),3 and Borneo;4 no data of him having visited these islands are available, so there is a possibility that he did not collect the plants himself.
