Born: 1890, Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. Died: 1950, Brisbane, Queensland, Australia.

 

career:

Was appointed Pupil Assistant to F.M. Bailey (his grandfather), Colonial Botanist of Queensland, in 1905; Acting Government Botanist in 1917; Government Botanist of Queensland in 1918. He received an invitation from his Excellency Sir J.H.P. Murray, Lt Gov. of Papua, to visit the Territory for the purpose of studying its vegetation in June 1918.1 In 1944 he visited Papua with Dr H.E. Dadswell, lecturing for the forestry units; in 1945 he visited the island once more.2

Author of several papers on the flora of Queensland, and elaborator of some New Guinea collections (see sub Brass, Lane-Poole, etc.).

Psychotria, Mussaenda, Ixora whitei Sp. Moore, and numerous other plants were named after him.

 

Collecting localities:

1918. SE. New Guinea, Papua: after a few days at Port Moresby, leaving in company with the Papuan Government geologist Evan R. Stanley for the Sogeri Plateau and Javararie (= Iawarere), via Sapphire Creek and the Astrolabe Range (about 2000 ft); after spending a fortnight (July 26-Aug. 2)1 in this region, he returned to Port Moresby and after a few days’ stay left for Yule Island; in Yule Island making a journey over to the mainland (Mafulu District, Aug. 5-21), up the Ethel River as far as Bioto, and a march of 5 days to Bella Vista (between Dilava and Mafulu, Ranges about Mafulu, 4000 ft). In total from 5 to 6 weeks of actual collecting was spent in the field. -1944. NE. New Guinea (6 weeks in July-Aug.),2 headquarters at Lae.-1945. On the return voyage from the Solomon Islands visiting the Mandated Territory once more, viz Wan (Morobe Distr.) and the Bulolo Valley.

In 1944 the collected plants were given N.G.F. (= New Guinea Forces, see there) numbers [LAE]; also at Brisbane [BRI] with the small collection 1945.
