Born: 1907, Sneek, Fr., Holland.

 

career:

Engineer, educated at the Technical College, Zürich (Switzerland); Flying Officer of the Roy. Dutch Navy, 1931-37; in charge of the B.P.M. (Batavian Oil Co.) Aerial Mapping Service of E. Borneo, 1938-39; in active service of the Roy. Navy, 1939-46; and since 1947 Head of the Aerial Service of the N.N.G.P.M. (Netherlands New Guinea Oil Co.). He was a member of the Colijn Expedition to the Carstensz Mountains in New Guinea (see below). 1 The 3rd member was the geologist J.J. Dozy.

In 1937 he discovered the Wissel Lakes which were named in his honour. He is commemorated in the moss Barbula wisselii Dixon.

Colijn Expedition, 1936.1 Dutch New Guinea: Colijn & Dozy setting out from Babo (Oct. 23); leaving Aika on the mouth of the Newerip (29); Wissel joining the others in a bivouac above 3000 m (Nov. 21); reaching the Ngga Poeloe (5040 m), one of the summits of the Carstensz Mts (Dec. 5); back at Babo (end of Dec.).

Herb. Bog. [BO]: 153 nos of ferns and phanerogams, 31 nos of cryptogams. The collection is fragmentary, as the circumstances allowed but a little collecting.2
