Born: 1875, Davos, Switzerland. Died: Nov. 10, 1922, Malang, Java.

 

career:

Studied natural history at Neuchâtel and Berne, taking his Ph.Dr’s degree in 1904 on a mycological subject. In June 1905 he came in Java as Botanist-Mycologist of the Cocoa Experiment Station at Salatiga (Centr. Java); in 1909 stationed at Malang, and in 1911 appointed Director of the newly erected Experiment Station there.1

 

Collecting localities:

E. Java. Between 1905-22.- C. Java: G. Merbabu (Sept. 6-8, 1907; Nov. 16, 1908); E. Java: G. Ardjoeno (Sept. 11-12, 1909; 1913).-In 1916: G. Kawi with P. Arens (see there) (Apr. 23); Jang Plateau (May); Lalidjiwo on the slope of G. Ardjoeno; Centr. Java: G. Merbaboe and other localities.-E. Java: Ranoe Koembolo (Jan. 1917); W. Java: Tjibodas (Apr. 6-7, 1920; possibly not collecting).

Herb. Bog. [BO]: dried orchids etc. (pres. 1913 and 1916); Herb. Berne [BERN]: botanical objects from Java, incl. a beautiful collection of Javan mountain plants (pres. 1914 and 1928), and parasitic Fungi. From a letter from Valckenier Suringar, dated July 13, 1928 (in the archives of the Buitenzorg Herbarium), it is evident that Herb. Wageningen [WAG] has a collection of his plants too.
