Yapp, Richard Henry

Born: 1871, Orleton, Herefordshire, England. Died: 1929, Birmingham, England.

 

career:

Studied botany at Cambridge (Ph.Dr 1898); Curator Cambridge University Herbarium from 1900-03; later Professor at Aberystwyth, Belfast, and since 1919 at Birmingham.

In 1899 he was attached to the Skeat Expedition to Siam and the Siamese-Malay States (see below), performed under the auspices of Cambridge University.

Begonia yappii Ridl. was named after him.

 

Collecting localities:

Sket Expedition, 1899. cf also sub W.W. Skeat, Th.N. Annandale and D.Th. Gwynne Vaughan. Mostly in Lower Siam, from March 29 onwards, but also in the Malay Peninsula,1 viz in Kelantan: Kuala Aring (according to Burkill1 from Aug. 16-Sept. 26, according to Skeat2 reaching this locality on Aug. 6); about Kota Bahru (Sept. 29-Oct. 10); Kuala Essam; Trengganu: Trengganu town (Oct. 11-13); islands off the coast (14-19); Trengganu (Oct. 20-Nov. 4), at Kuala Ibar S of the town, etc.; Perak (possibly only Yapp): Selama village (Nov. 27-29); G. Inas (Dec. 6-24); Sira Rimau (Dec. 26-Jan. 4, 1900).
