Veitch, James Herbert

Born: 1868, Chelsea, England. Died: 1907, Exeter, England.

 

career:

Of the horticultural firm of Veitch & Sons, commenced work at Chelsea in 1885. Some six years later he made a tour of inspection of the great Botanic and Public Gardens maintained by governments in various centres and besides of many private horticultural establishments, to endeavour whether their own gardens might be enriched by further additions.1 In 1900 he was appointed Manager of the Nurseries, and subsequently had a breakdown.

Sailing from Napels (Oct. 1891) for British India; Straits Settlements: Penang (Hill and Public Gardens); Singapore Botanic Gardens; Johore; at the return in Singapore climbing Bt Timah with Mr W. Fox of the Gardens (Febr. 1892); W. Java: Buitenzorg Botanic Garden, crater of G. Papandajan, and Lake Bagendit near Garoet; Japan; Corea; Australia; New Zealand; returning to England in 1893.

Herb. Kew [K]: Corea, W. Australia (pres. 1886-93), 598 nos; Herb. Brit. Mus. [BM]: 138 nos from W. Australia, 72 nos from Corea (pres. 1893). Though no plants from the Malaysian region: are mentioned in these records, it still seems possible that the collection includes some plants from the Malay Peninsula and Java.
