Born: 1879, Lonneker, O., Holland. Died: 1952, Wassenaar, Holland.

 

career:

A botanist who was educated and took his degree (1905) at Amsterdam University; since July 1905 in the employ of the Department of Agriculture at Buitenzorg, occupying various posts; at the end of 1909 for 3 years on deputation in Surinam; after return at Buitenzorg filling various places in the said Department again, finally Director of the General Experiment Station for Agriculture, 1921-27. He retired in 1928; subsequently Adviser for the firm of Dunlop and others in Malaya, etc. He was appointed University Lecturer in the Economy of Tropical Agriculture at Leiden University in 1936, and at Wageningen on rubber in 1937. When stranded in England, after the German invasion of Holland, he returned to the D.E.I. in mid-1940; two years later he was appointed at the above-mentioned Experiment Station by the Japanese Government and was charged to prepare, with F.H. Endert, a new edition of Heyne’s ‘Nuttige planten’ (useful plants). After the war he was evacuated to Holland, and in 1947 he was appointed Honorary Professor of Tropical Cultures at Utrecht University.

He is the author of many papers on economic plants.

E. Java: G. Kawi (Oct. 10, 1905); S. Sumatra (Aug.-Sept. 1915): Benkoelen (Kroei, Kenali) and in Lampong Districts (Kota Agoeng, Wai Beloe).-Lesser Sunda Islands: Bali (1918).
