Born: 1891, Gouderak, Z.H., Holland. Died: 1955, Amsterdam, Holland.

 

career:

Lieutenant who entered the Roy. Dutch Navy in 1910. He took part in the Military Exploration Detachment in New Guinea for more than 2 years, and was the first European to climb the so-called Doormantop;1 the Doorman River was named after him too. At present vice-admiral in the Dutch Navy.

 

Collecting localities:2

Dutch North New Guinea (Oct. 1912-Jan. 1915). From Dec. 2-14, 1912, the SE. part of the Geelvink Bay, the coast region between Wanggar and Siriwo, and the situation of the islands N of Hamoekoe and the Haarlem Isls, were mapped out (with Lt Stroeve). He took part in the 3rd Mamberamo expedition3 under Capt. Opperman: Pionier bivouac (Dec. 1913); setting out from there (June 3, 1914) with column Schultz, ascending the Mamberamo for reconnaissance of the Rouffaer River (June 17); reaching a summit of 2650 m alt. (Aug. 26); reconnaissance of various tributary rivers in the neighbourhood (till Oct. 18); the expedition setting out on the way back, while Doorman ascended Idenburg River and made a tour by land in southern direction, reaching a summit of about 3550 m alt. (Nov. 21; descent on the 23rd).

Herb. Bog. [BO]: about 40 nos preserved in alcohol, without indication of locality. It is certain, that he collected orchids during the 3rd Mamberamo expedition,4 whether before that time too, we do not know.
