career:

Of Stepney, connected with the India House, owner of a garden. He sent a collector to P. Penang (Mal. Penins.) (1808, cf. sub Anonymous), who discovered the beautiful Begonia evansiana; he spent almost his whole income on the acquirement of new and rare plants from China, etc., which he generously distributed among other collectors (cf. Journ. Bot. 41, 1903, p. 372-373).

Evansia Salisb. was named after him too.
