Born: 1908, Menominee, Mich., U.S.A.

 

career:

A.B. and A.M. from the University of Michigan, 1932 and 1933. Of the U.S. Sugar Crops Field Station at Canal Point, Florida, returned medio 1957 from a sugar-cane expedition to New Guinea. He collected over 40 species of native Andropogoneae. A cytological study of these grasses will be made by R.P. Celarier of Oklahama Agricultural and Mechanical College, in connection with the pastures research program of that institution. Grassl will use some of the wild grasses in sugar-cane breeding experiments.

New Guinea (fortnight in early June): Ramu R., Bainyik near Maprik (Sepik drainage), Sepik R.; New Britain: Keravat; Solomon Is (8 days, mid-June): Guadalcanal, Florida I., Buka I.; Austr. New Guinea (10 days): New Britain, near Keravat; Epo, near Mekeo; Popondetta.

Andropogoneae from New Guinea, specimens made from flowering living plants, will be deposited in the specialized herbarium at Canal Point, Florida. Earlier collections from Canada, and Michigan, in Herb. Un. Michigan [MICH]; Andropogoneae from Centr. America and E. Africa in Nat. Herb. Wash. [US] and in Florida.
