career:

Missionary of the American Methodist Mission, who undertook the supervision of the Indonesian collector Rahmat si Boeea, employed by H.H. Bartlett. At the time of Fairchild’s cruise in the ‘Chêng Ho’, in 1940, head of the Protestant Mission in Ambon. During World War II he was interned with Dutch P.O.W.’s respectively in Java, Changi (Singapore), Thailand and Japan. He evoked the admiration of all those who were so lucky to share his camp life, for his wonderful unselfish behaviour. After the Japanese capitulation he left for America for the recovery of himself and his family. In 1946 he was decorated by the Dutch Government.

Rinorea hamelii Merr. was named after him.
