Born: 1821, Niehem, Westphalia, Germany. Died: 1886, Heidelberg, Germany.

Physician, educated at Göttingen, Heidelberg, and Berlin. An affection of the lungs forced him to leave his country. He set sail for Australia, from there passed to Manila (Luzon, P.I.), and on account of his health embarked on a brig bound for San Francisco. By advice he subsequently settled in the Sandwich or Hawaiian Islands, where he resided from 1851-71.1 In 1865 and 1866 he was on a voyage as Commissioner of Immigration for the Hawaiian Government to China and the East Indies.
