Hollrung, Udo Max

Born: 1858, Hosterwitz on the Elbe, near Dresden, Germany. Died: 1937, Halle a/Saale, Germany.

 

career:

Was educated at Leipsic (Ph. Dr); in 1882 appointed Assistant at the Agricultural Institute, Halle a/Saale; in 1889 Director of the Institute for Plant Protection there, with the honorary title of professor; from 1905-24 Lecturer in Plant Diseases at Halle University, in 1924 appointed Professor.

He undertook the botany department of an expedition under the auspices of the German New Guinea Company under command of Dr Schrader (see there).

He is commemorated in the genus Hollrungia K.Schum. and in several plant species.

 

Collecting localities:

1886-87.1 Former Kaiser-Wilhelmsland (= NE. New Guinea): Finschhafen (Apr. 19, 1886); exploration of the hinterland; excursion to the Gulf of Langemak (May 10); Bubui Valley (beginning of June); Gulf of Selang (July 10), Waulu Mt. (11), Bo-Spitze (= Point), coast; Bogidu, Sattelberg, Kaluèng River; sailing from Finschhafen (24) via Konstantinhafen and Hatzfeldhafen to the mouth of the Augusta (= Sepik) River (29), ascending the latter till Aug. 6; back at Finschhafen (13).2 At the end of Sept. arriving for a longer sojourn at Hatzfeldhafen; setting out (beginning of Nov.) for an exploration of the region E of that place to Cape Gourdon; trip to the Regenberg (= Ulum Bèbi, S of Hatzfeldhafen); coast region W of Hatzfeldhafen; in the beginning of 1887 to Finschhafen again; to Konstantinhafen (Jan. 31), till March 31 exploring the region near Astrolabe Bay between Cape Maragun and Friedrich Wilhelmshafen.3 Bivouac NE of the village Bagili (approx. opposite Juno Isl.) (Apr. 1-15); marching along the coast to Cape Croisilles; region between Alexis-Hafen and the Gabaron (22-28); neighbouring mountain ridge (May 1-9); to Finschhafen (13), and to Butauèng (Langemak Bucht) (May 19-June 1), visiting Mésuing.4 Sailing in the ‘Samoa’ (June 24) for the exploration of the basin of the Augusta River: Konstantinhafen (26), Hatzfeldhafen (27), mouth of the Augusta River (28); ascending the river till July 6; bivouac at kp. Tsenap (= Zenap) (8); the ‘Samoa’ returned to Finschhafen (Aug. 20) and the members of the expedition were put ashore at Malu, part of the way downstream, making camp; Nov. 7 the expedition was taken aboard the ‘Ottilie’; Purdy Islands (Nov. 12-15); via Bismarck Archip.: Nusa Isl., Mioko, Matupi and Ralum back to Finschhafen (arrival on the 25th).5-Before returning to Europe he visited Melbourne, Sydney, Buitenzorg (W. Java), Singapore and Hongkong.
