Born: 1863, Bandoeng, Java. Died: 1919, Batavia, Java.

 

career:

Forest Officer, since 1885 in the employ of the D.E.I. Forest Service, stationed in Java. He soon (1888) started the investigation on the forest flora of Java.1 In Sept. 1892 he was stationed at the Buitenzorg Herbarium; in 1895 he visited many European herbaria, for the compilation of a flora of the Javan mountains.2 In Oct. 1897 back in Java again and since 1898 working at the Herbarium once more; after the appointment of Th. Valeton as Chief of the Herbarium (1903), he was at his own request replaced in the Forest Service, stationed at Bagelen; in 1906 on sick-leave to Europe; in 1910 placed at Buitenzorg again for the continuation of his work.3 In 1912 he founded the Society for Nature Preservation in the D.E.I.

Several Malaysian plants were named after him.

Herb. Koorders, in Herb. Bog. [BO], in total c. 40.000 nos;15 some of his collections inserted in the herbarium generale, viz the Semarang and Djapara collection (1886), that from Karimon Djawa (231 nos, 1886) and from G. Merbaboe (1888); from Celebes c. 3500 specim. (1375 species, partly with material in alcohol),16 many living plants (Hort. Bog.), etc.

Duplicates in various other herbaria; at Leiden [L] (from Diëng Plateau, Centr. Java, etc.); Kew [K]: 1366 nos (pres. 1894-98) and other dupl. (pres. 1913); Berl. [B]: 1333 nos (pres. 1894-1903) and 479 nos material in alcohol from Java; Manila [PNH]: 150 nos Java; Utrecht [U]: Java plants (1897-99, 1919); Groningen [now in L]: some dupl. of Theaceae and of Saurauia.

From Dec. 1884-March 1885 he made a herbarium of cultivated plants in the Buitenzorg Botanic Gardens, which was destroyed by insects etc.

He employed native collectors, but collected himself too.
